Autism and Fundamental Movement Skill Seminar - Cork

IPPEA & St. Patrick's College PE Unit Event

The Physical Education Unit at St. Patricks College and Irish Primary PE Association hosted a workshop for primary teachers and local sports partnerships on 12th November 2014 in St. Patrick's College. The workshop focussed on 'The Place of Fundamental Movement Skills in the Primary Physical Education Programme.' There was a short presentation followed by a practical workshop based on selected lesson plans from the PSSI lesson plan online resource.

The workshop evolved from a SCoTENS funded research project 2012-2014 in which UCC, St. Patricks College and University of Stranmillis are partners. In the research study Susan Marron, St. Patrick's College, examined 'Addressing Fundamental Movement Skill Provision in Physical Education Courses by Primary Teacher Educator Providers in the Republic of Ireland.' There is now a 'Fundamental Movement Skills hub' where workshops are being organised in Cork, Dublin and Belfast. This is the second workshop to be held.

The Dublin workshop was delivered by Dr. Deborah Tannehill. Deborah was a teaching faculty member of the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences University of Limerick from 2005-2013 and was co-director of the PE PAYS Research Centre at the University of Limerick. Deborah has widely published. She recently co-wrote a book with Ann MacPhail, Ger Halbert and Frances Murphy entitled 'Research and Practice in Physical Education.'

The workshop notes are available in the Members Section!

People are being encouraged to vote on their favourite games from your childhood and then introduce these games to their own children. When you get a spare minute, please go to the safefood website to vote for your favourite childhood game. Consider teaching your favourite game to the children you teach for break time play to encourage more physical activity.
